The villages of the north of Tenerife that you shouldn’t miss
Tenerife inspires, and this is something that can be corroborated by the thousands of tourists who visit the Canary Islands every year. Beyond its “assured sunshine”, as the famous song of the group “Los Mismos” said, Tenerife also promises to be a place full of surprises, ideal to learn about its traditions, take relaxing walks and taste the delicious Canarian cuisine.
Specifically, the north of Tenerife has a number of towns that are almost mandatory visits for anyone who chooses to spend their holiday on the island. History, colonial architecture, exquisite gardens, and the most attractive environments, are many of the highlights of these locations. Will you join us on this tour?
Villages of the north of Tenerife: an appointment with tradition
Garachico
The coastal town with a thousand interesting corners. It offers imposing views of the sea, dominated by the sculpture of the Japanese artist Kan Yasuda on the dock; charming streets and natural pools. This makes it an ideal location for a relaxing afternoon, with a refreshing swim included. Among its churches, monasteries and squares are some great examples of traditional Canarian architecture, which is why the well-known series Doctor Who decided to turn Garachico into one of its stages during season 9.
La Orotava
La Orotava is synonymous with colour and, the best proof of this is the incredible gardens and the façades of small palaces which always surprise its visitors. Indeed, this place has a stately air that we love and that transports us to past centuries through its cobbled streets. Among its main attractions is the famous Casa de los Balcones, which is probably the best example of the iconic Canarian balconies you will find in Tenerife. For the icing on the cake of your visit, don’t forget to go to see Casa Egón, an incredible candy shop, and restaurant that maintains the appearance of traditional confectioneries, where coffee and pastry time will turn into an experience not to be missed.
Tacoronte
One of the most famous locations for traditions and the epicenter of wine and wineries par excellence. It is not a particularly large town, but in it, you can taste the best wines and see first-hand the rich vegetable gardens of the north of Tenerife. Every Saturday and Sunday, between 8:00 am and 2:00 pm, you can attend the Farmer’s Market to buy local vegetables and fruit, as well as other traditional products such as cheeses, breads and biscuits. If you are looking for in-depth knowledge of local customs, this is the place.
Puerto de la Cruz
If you decide to stay at Hotel GF Noelia ***, during your holiday you will be lucky enough to experience one of the most charming towns in the north of Tenerife. Traditional streets, a multitude of opportunities for the whole family, amazing gastronomy, beaches and a vibrant nightlife await you in an emblematic resort visited by tourists from all over the world. Don’t be fooled because Puerto de la Cruz is far from being a tourist conglomerate. It is a beautiful location, quiet, with mild temperatures throughout the year and with all the amenities you will need at your fingertips.
Taganana
You cannot visit Tenerife without exploring the Anaga Rural Park. Its forests of Laurisilva, now almost unique in the world, are one of the great attractions of this place, but so is the magic of discovering its diverse population centres. One of the most famous is Taganana, a small village spreading from the mountainside to the coast that serves as a meeting point for those who want to get close to the incredible beaches of the area (Roque de las Bodegas, Almáciga, Benijo …) or to taste the rich fried octopus. Without a doubt, a complete immersion in nature that you will not regret.
