The application ‘Be Green Life’ is a pioneer in measuring the ecological footprint of guests during their stay on the islands
GF Hoteles, the only hotel chain in the archipelago invited to present its project this Wednesday at the Urban Waste assembly in the Portuguese capital
The afore-mentioned European project promotes waste management in tourist cities and counts on 27 partners, among them Ashotel and the Tenerife Cabildo
The Canarian hotel chain GF Hoteles, associate of Ashotel, will visit Lisbon this Wednesday to exhibit in the assembly of the European project, Urban Waste, the first application developed in the islands, to facilitate data intelligence and environmental communication with the guest. Called “Be Green Life”, this application will advise the guest about the energy impact of their actions during their stay in the company´s hotels. GF Hoteles is the only hotel chain chosen from the Canary Islands to present its sustainable innovation project at this European forum.
The team travelling to the Portuguese capital is led by the Director General of the chain, Victoria Lopez, who will be joined by Director of Operations, Juan Carlos de León. Also attending will be Francis Ortiz, technical advisor of the project. and on Wednesday 28th November, he will demonstrate the innovative aspects of this application, with the aim of turning it into a powerful information and management tool working for the benefit of the guest. “Be Green Life” aims to involve and reward the guest in contributing towards reducing the consumption of energy generated in the establishments of GF Hoteles.
Technology at the service of sustainability
The application is in the development phase and its ultimate objective is to place people at the centre of the decisions made by the chain in relation to energy efficiency. For Victoria Lopez, ‘Be Green Life’ will be “the technological vanguard that best defines the change of cultural model towards sustainability, a change that is here to stay, and for which there is no turning back”.
To reiterate this sentiment, Juan Carlos de León says that the development of this application “should reflect the results of eight years of work translated into strong results in our chain, in reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by more than 2,200 tons.
‘Be Green Life’ was one of the projects presented this year to the tourism innovation competition, IntraTEAM, an initiative promoted by FIT Canarias and Ashotel, and financed by the Tenerife Cabildo in collaboration with Ecoembes and Ecovidrio. As a result of the interest shown by GF Hoteles, the initiative has continued its development and the chain hopes to have it ready very soon.
Urban Waste is funded by the European Commission and includes 27 members and 70 participants, all seeking solutions to manage waste in tourist cities. The entity in charge of coordinating projects in the Canary Islands is the Vice-Ministry of the Environment of the Autonomous Government. Among the Canarian members who will also attend the Lisbon assembly will be Ashotel and the Tenerife Cabildo.
